News BT Slough outage - 30th March 2011
As I am sure customers are well aware there was a major issue within the BT wholesale network in Slough on 30th March which affected a lot of customers.
Summary of issue
At 17:35:07 we lots connectivity to all 20CN BRASs in Reading and all 21CN BRASs in Slough and two of our Ethernet services. This is approximately 10% of lines.
At approximately 03:30 broadband connectivity was restored after a few false starts, and some minor blips later in the morning.
At approximately 06:35 Ethernet services were restored.
Question for BT
We have several serious concerns which are yet to be properly addresses. BT have sent a confidential reply to us, but not a public statement.
- What happened?
- Why did it take so long to resolve?
- Why did Ethernet services take even longer to fix?
- What is being done to stop this happening again?
- How is there a single point of failure within BTW at this level given that BT claim to have added lots of redundancy and resilience in to the core network already?
Answers
Sadly the statement is not to be published. The information in the report is confidential. We are asking BT to make a public statement.
What I can say is that we have some indication as to what happened, but not any of the other questions above.
We will update this page when we have more information.
